Read Along: Just Be Glad by Christian D. Larson | Optimism Explored —

Just Be Glad is a motivational book written by Christian D. Larson. It was written over a century ago in 1912. It is a bit of a poetic exploration of optimism. This book talks to your soul. It is a way of thinking, or being that may sound familiar. Yet it is not a familiar mindset for most people today.

“Just Be Glad” focuses on the importance of positive thinking and how it can help us to overcome challenges and achieve our goals. It gives us clues to delve deeper into the strange often misunderstood territory of our thinking.

Larson believes that our thoughts have the power to shape our reality and that by maintaining a positive mindset, we can attract positivity into our lives.

He suggests that we should focus on the good in every situation, and try to find the silver lining in even the most difficult circumstances. By doing so, we can cultivate a sense of happiness and contentment that will help us to lead fulfilling lives.

“ALL things respond to the call of rejoicing; all things gather where life is a song. This is the message of the new order, the new life and the new time. It is the golden text of the great gospel of human sunshine. It is the central truth of that sublime philosophy of existence, which declares that the greatest good is happiness and that heaven is here and now.”

There is a common belief today that we are not in control of how we feel. Rather our feelings control us. That our circumstances control us. Rather than us controlling our circumstances.

If you look at positivity philosophies. They differ fundamentally from our culture’s seemingly dominant cynical and pessimistic often disempowering view point. While yes, we must listen to our bodies and respond to the situation at hand. We must be aware of and honor how we feel. Because what is happening, what we think, and what we feel is important. We must consider though, how we have habituated our thought process.

We do not need to fall into despair. If our thoughts and feelings impact our reality and we see things that create sadness and sorrow. We can step back. Take a breath. Let go of all the thoughts racing through our minds. Feel the feelings. If there is fear turn it to power. Turn it to shifting the world. Find the silver lining. It is always there.

We do not need to be impacted by this tin he way we have seen others model how to respond to this reality.

“To live in the spirit of this wonderful message; to be a living example of this great gospel, to work out in everyday life the principle of this inspiring philosophy, the first and most important thing to do, is to lay aside our sorrows and glooms, and just be glad.”

This little book focuses on one thing. JUST BE GLAD.

That is the essence of this book is this one thing. No matter what happens in life. Be glad.

Optimism, positivity can be perceived in a few ways. First, no one wants to HAVE TO be glad. I think this is the key to self-actualization, or in fact any internal work. Being personally optimistic is very different than being told you must be optimistic. Or even worse to have things in place in society where you are forced to be glad. It is a personal choice. Freewill. We can be miserable if we wish to be.

Gladness, optimism is power. And when inverted it is something twisted and exhausting. How do we know the difference? Sometimes we need to be miserable, we need to feel emotions that are not all sunshine.

I think that when we listen to messages like this book it creates a file in our mind for greater optimism. For understanding things differently. Since we are so embedded in our way of thinking. Based on growing up in this time and place. In this mindset.

“One reason is we live too much in the limitations of our appointments, our lost opportunities, our blasted hopes, our vanquished
dreams. We remain in that small world, deploring fate, when, if we would only permit mind and soul to take wings and go out upon the vastness of real existence, we would find, not only freedom, but a life infinitely richer than we had ever dreamed.”

By reading books like this we help change the automatic programming of our very subconscious. Our subconscious, my darlings, that is something else altogether.
